Got Fussy Eaters? Lovers of Fruit, Pasta and Potatoes?

This is one of THE most common issues among my clients, the dreaded fussy eater. Oh I have heard so many times the despair in a mothers voice as she says "There is NO WAY I could get little Johnny to eat that". There are a couple of very important things you need to know when it comes to fussy eaters-

1. It's not in their head...

It is very natural to feel that your child's food choices are a decision they are consciously making, and this is what makes it so hard to comprehend the fact that they may not always eat 5 bananas a day followed by 16 crackers and a whole watermelon. Food choices and behaviours have A LOT to do with what is going on with the micro biome in both the gut, and the mouth, this is not a theory by the way, it's science - Microbes in the gastrointestinal tract are under selective pressure to manipulate host eating behavior to increase their fitness, sometimes at the expense of host fitness. Microbes may do this through two potential strategies: (i) generating cravings for foods that they specialize on or foods that suppress their competitors, or (ii) inducing dysphoria until we eat foods that enhance their fitness (source)The exciting thing is that microbiotia are very easily manipulated, so by making some small adjustments to start shifting the gut and mouth micro biome you can greatly effect the food choices your kids are making. This is seriously empowering!

2. You don't have to have screaming matches and force food into them...

Yep, for some people it seems like the only way. I love telling my clients that it's not! It doesn't have to be absolute torture. The key is, find one way to get something in that is going to begin the healing process. So for my clients, we usually start with lollies made with grass-fed gelatine powder and fruit. I haven't met a kid yet who doesn't love these! This is a simple way to introduce something that can begin the healing process, and will then make other changes much simpler. Once you have got the first change down pat, look at what you could add in next. I always try and get meat stocks in as they are the real game changer, and you can just hide them in your cooking! So just take it one step at a time.

So does it seem a little easier now? If you need some help, then that is what I do best, I guide my clients step by step in making the changes that will heal their families at a pace that suits them, so it can be sustained over a life time.
